Band 7Getting past 6.5

How to Get Band 7 in IELTS from Bangladesh

Getting to 6.0 is mostly about knowing English. Getting to 7.0 is about something else, which is why so many students in Bangladesh stall at 6.5 and cannot find the missing half band by working harder at the same things. Here is what the missing half band usually is.

Why 6.5 is where preparation stops working

There is a pattern in Bangladesh that anyone who teaches IELTS here will recognise. A student moves from 5.5 to 6.5 fairly quickly — a few months, some technique, a lot of practice tests. Then they do exactly the same things for another six months and score 6.5 again.

This is not bad luck and it is not a plateau in ability. It is a change in what is being measured. Up to about band 6, the exam is largely asking can you do this in English at all. From 7, it is asking can you do it well — and "more practice" answers the first question, not the second.

The half band that is missing is almost always in one place, and it is worth finding out where before you spend another month.

The first ceiling: correct but plain

Read this criterion name carefully, because the whole problem is inside it: Grammatical Range and Accuracy. It is 25% of your Writing band and 25% of your Speaking band. There are two words in it. Most students in Bangladesh work exclusively on the second one.

The result is an essay with no errors in it that cannot get past band 6 on that criterion, because everything in it is a simple sentence. A student who writes:

What band 6 sounds likeWhat band 7 sounds like
Dhaka is crowded. Many people move to the suburbs. The traffic is very bad. Because Dhaka is so crowded, many families are moving to the suburbs — a shift that has, in turn, made the traffic on the approach roads worse.
Online courses are cheap. They are popular with students. Online courses, which are considerably cheaper, have become popular with students who would otherwise not study at all.

Nothing in the left column is wrong. That is the trap: a student can proofread it, find no errors, and conclude their grammar is fine. It is fine. It is also band 6.

The fix is narrow and it is learnable. Relative clauses, conditionals, the passive used deliberately rather than by accident, punctuation that lets you join ideas without "Firstly, Secondly", and the hedging language that makes a claim sound measured rather than absolute. That is roughly nine things — there are hundreds of grammar topics and only a handful that change this number — and the free Grammar app is where to drill them.

The second ceiling: memorised answers in Speaking

The Speaking trap runs the other way, and it is the one that costs prepared students the most.

A student who is anxious about Speaking memorises answers. It feels like preparation. In the room, the examiner hears it immediately — the rhythm changes, the eyes go up and left, the vocabulary suddenly outclasses everything else the candidate has said — and the score goes down, not up, because fluency is partly about responding to what was actually asked.

What does work is preparing shapes rather than scripts. For any Part 3 question, the band 7 answer has a recognisable structure: a position, a reason, an example, and a concession. Practise the structure on a hundred different topics and you will never need a script, because you will always know what the next sentence is doing.

The free Speaking app shows a band 7 and a band 9 answer to the same question. Reading either one alone teaches you a good answer. Reading both teaches you the distance — which is the thing you are actually trying to cross.

Listening and Reading: the honest news

These two are the good news, because they have answer keys. You can measure yourself accurately, you can correct yourself without another person, and band 7 in both is reachable by self-study if you are systematic.

Two specific things separate a 6.5 from a 7 here, and neither is vocabulary.

  • Pace in Reading. If your third passage is half empty, your problem is not comprehension and no amount of reading practice will fix it. It is a timing rule: roughly twenty minutes a passage, and you leave a question rather than sinking five minutes into it. There is no negative marking, so an unanswered question is strictly worse than a guess.
  • Question-type method in both. Somebody who fails Matching Headings does not know that they failed it by reading the passage first. True / False / Not Given is not a comprehension test, it is a test of whether you can tell "contradicted" from "not mentioned". These are methods, not skills, and they are invisible from inside.

Stop spreading the work evenly

The most common way to waste three months is to give each skill a quarter of your time. Half a band overall is almost never four small gaps; it is one large one.

So measure first.

  1. Take the free five-minute level test to get a rough per-skill picture, or use your last real result if you have one.
  2. Sit one full mock test to see how those numbers hold up under two and a half hours of pressure. They usually drop, and Writing usually drops most, because it comes last.
  3. Give the weakest skill roughly half your study time for six weeks. Keep the others ticking over — a skill decays if abandoned — but stop pretending they are equal.
  4. Sit a second mock. If the weak skill moved and the others held, repeat with whatever is now lowest. If nothing moved, the work you were doing was the wrong work, and that is worth knowing after six weeks rather than after six months.

What you cannot do alone, honestly

It would be convenient for us to tell you that band 7 requires a course. It does not — in Listening and Reading, plenty of students get there on their own, and everything we have written for those two skills is free.

But Writing is genuinely different, and it is worth being straight about why. You cannot see your own errors. If you could, they would not be in your essay. A student can write forty Task 2 essays alone and make the same three mistakes forty times, and finish more confident and no better. The thing that breaks that loop is somebody reading it and naming the mistake — and once it is named, it usually disappears in a week.

Speaking has the same shape for a smaller reason: you cannot hear your own hesitation patterns while producing them.

So the honest division is this. Use the six free practice apps for everything you can measure yourself. Get another person for the two things you cannot. BayRen's IELTS Master Course is ৳10,500 for 2.5 months, thirty live classes, eight support sessions and five marked mock tests — and if after a month with the free material you find your band is moving fine on its own, we would rather you kept the money and spent it on the exam.

A four-month plan that is not a fantasy

WhenWhat
Weeks 1–2Measure. Level test, then one full mock. Write down the question types you scored worst on.
Weeks 3–8Half your time on the weakest skill. If it is Writing, one essay every two days, and get every one of them marked by somebody. If it is grammar underneath, work in the free Grammar app daily.
Weeks 9–10Second mock. Compare the per-criterion breakdown, not the overall band. Redirect.
Weeks 11–14Full timed sections twice a week to hold your pace, plus Speaking out loud daily — record it and listen back, which is what the free Speaking app is for.
Weeks 15–16Final mock about two weeks out. Then taper: light practice, no new material, and book the exam only if the mock says you are there.

The last line is the one people ignore. If your final mock says 6.5, do not sit the exam hoping for a good day. Move the date. One more month of preparation costs far less than one more exam fee — and you will have to pay both if you go early.

  • Writing-এ Grammatical Range and Accuracy মোট নম্বরের ২৫%।

Questions people ask

Is band 7 hard to get in IELTS?

It is a different kind of work from band 6, rather than more of the same. Band 6 rewards correct English. Band 7 rewards correct English used with range and precision, and the students who stall at 6.5 are usually accurate and plain rather than inaccurate.

How long does it take to go from 6.5 to 7?

For most students with steady, guided practice on the specific criterion that is behind, somewhere between two and four months. Doing the same general practice for longer rarely moves it, which is why students can prepare for a year and stay at 6.5.

Which section is hardest for Bangladeshi students?

Writing, consistently. It is the one skill you cannot correct alone, because you cannot see your own errors — if you could, they would not be there. It is also where the Grammatical Range and Accuracy criterion silently caps a plain, correct essay at band 6.

Can I get band 7 by self-study?

In Listening and Reading, yes — those have answer keys, so you can measure and correct yourself. In Writing and Speaking it is much harder, because both are judged against criteria you cannot apply to your own work. Free material takes you a long way; the last half band usually needs another person.

Do I need band 7 in every section?

Read your offer carefully. Many require an overall 7.0 with no section below 6.5, some require 7.0 in every section, and a few only ask 6.5 overall. Getting this wrong is expensive: always confirm the requirement on your own course or visa page before you set your target.
