GuideThe 8-week plan

How to Prepare for IELTS in 2 Months — a Week-by-Week Plan

Two months is enough to raise your IELTS score by half a band to a full band — if the time is spent on the right things. Here is the week-by-week plan we use with our own students.

Before week 1: measure, don't guess

Start with an honest baseline. Take a free level test — about five minutes — and note your weakest skill. The whole plan bends around that one skill, because it is the one holding your overall score down.

Weeks 1–2: foundations and format

  • Learn the exact format of all four sections — question types, timing, scoring. Surprises on test day cost half a band.
  • Grammar and vocabulary daily, 20–30 minutes: articles, tenses, subject-verb agreement, linking words. Small, daily, consistent.
  • Start a mistake notebook. Every wrong answer goes in with one line on why. You will reread it in week 8.

Weeks 3–4: skill-by-skill training

  • Reading: one passage a day with a timer — 20 minutes. Learn True/False/Not Given cold; it is the most misread question type.
  • Listening: one section a day. Practise spelling and numbers — most Listening marks lost are spelling marks.
  • Writing: alternate Task 1 and Task 2 every other day, and get every piece checked by a teacher. Uncorrected writing practice quietly practises your mistakes.
  • Speaking: record yourself two minutes a day on a Part 2 topic. Listen back. It is uncomfortable and it works.

Weeks 5–6: full sections under time

Move from single exercises to full timed sections. This is where scores actually rise — accuracy under time pressure is a separate skill from accuracy. Keep the daily grammar and vocabulary habit running underneath.

Weeks 7–8: mock tests and repair

  • Sit two or three full computer-based mock tests under real conditions — same timing, no pausing.
  • After each mock: one repair day on exactly what went wrong. Reread the mistake notebook.
  • Book your test date for shortly after a mock where you hit your target.

The honest part

A plan on a page corrects nothing — feedback does. Self-study works for Reading and Listening, but Writing and Speaking are scored by human examiners against criteria most students misread. That is why the IELTS Master Course runs 2.5 months with 30 live classes and teacher feedback on every writing task: it wraps this exact plan in the correction loop that makes it stick.

Reading about IELTS is step one. Practising is the rest.
