FormatOnline or in a room

Online vs Offline IELTS Coaching in Bangladesh

This is usually argued as though one format is better. It is not. Online and in-person coaching are good at different things, and the right answer depends on where you live, how you work and what your weakest skill is. BayRen teaches both, so here is the comparison without a thumb on the scale.

The comparison that actually matters

Before online or offline, there is a more important variable, and it decides more than format ever does: how many people are in the class, and whether a teacher reads your work.

An in-person class of forty-five where nobody marks your essays is worse than an online class of ten where somebody does. And an online class of a hundred with the chat disabled is worse than both. The room is not what teaches you. So settle that question first, for any course you are considering, and only then think about format.

With that said, the two formats genuinely differ, and the differences are worth knowing.

What in-person is better at

  • It is harder to skip. This is the real advantage and it is not a small one. You paid, you travelled, you are in the room — so you attend. Most students who fail to finish a course fail in weeks three to five, and a physical class carries you through that dip in a way a browser tab does not.
  • Speaking practice happens by accident. Before class, after class, in the corridor. Nobody schedules it, which is exactly why it happens. Online, speaking practice only happens when somebody organises it.
  • A teacher can see you are lost. A confused face in the third row is visible. A confused face behind a muted camera is not.
  • Fewer devices, fewer excuses. No microphone problems, no data pack, no load-shedding at the wrong moment.

What online is better at

  • Time. Two hours a day of Dhaka traffic across a ten-week course is roughly a hundred hours — more than the course itself. Those hours are not free; they are the hours you would have studied in.
  • Geography. A student in Rangpur, Barishal or a district town does not have three good centres to choose from. Online, they have the same teacher a student in Dhanmondi has.
  • Recordings. You will miss a class — a wedding, illness, work. If it is recorded, you missed nothing. If it is not, you missed a class you paid for. Ask about this before enrolling; it is one of the clearest differences between a well-run online course and a badly-run one.
  • It matches the exam. Most test centres now run computer-delivered IELTS. If you are going to type your essays on the day, typing them all through your course is not a compromise — it is the correct preparation. Students who trained on paper and then sat the computer test routinely lose marks to the format alone.
  • Cost. Usually somewhat lower, because nobody is paying Gulshan rent. Not always dramatically, but it goes the right way.

The four skills, one by one

SkillWhich format helps more
ListeningOnline, slightly. You hear the audio through your own headphones at your own volume, which is what happens in a computer-delivered test. In a room you hear it through a speaker at the back, which is not.
ReadingNeither. Reading improves through timed practice and question-type method, both of which are the same alone. The free Reading app gives you the timed practice whichever way you study.
WritingNeither — it depends entirely on marking. The only thing that improves Writing is somebody reading yours and naming the fault. Ask how many marked essays are included, in both formats. That number is the course.
SpeakingIn-person, a little. Not because video is bad — the real Speaking test is a person looking at you either way — but because informal practice happens around an in-person class and has to be deliberately arranged around an online one.

If you live outside Dhaka, ask a different question

Most articles about this are written as though everyone has both options. Outside Dhaka and Chattogram, many students do not. The real comparison is online against nothing — or online against a course whose journey you will stop making by week three.

Seen that way it is not close. A course you attend every week at a moderate level beats an excellent course you abandon. And the third option — self-study — is genuinely available too: BayRen's six practice apps are free. Start there, and buy a course when you can see what you are not fixing alone.

Three honest questions to ask yourself

  1. Have I finished an online course before? Not started — finished. If you have abandoned two, that is data about you, not about online learning, and you should pay for the room.
  2. Is my weakest skill Writing? If so, format barely matters. Choose on marking: how many essays get read, by whom, and how fast the feedback comes back.
  3. How will I get to class, and how long will it take? Multiply by the number of classes. Be honest about whether you will still be doing that in week eight.

What BayRen does

Both, deliberately. The IELTS Master Course is ৳10,500 for 2.5 months — 30 live classes, 8 support sessions and 5 marked mock tests, with no extras — and in-person classes are available for students who want the room. Message us and we will tell you which batches are running in which format right now.

Two things run alongside either choice and cost nothing. The mock test is computer-based whichever way you study, because that is what most students will sit — five are included in the course fee. And the six free apps sit between classes: the Speaking app in particular records you and plays it back, which closes most of the gap that online study leaves in speaking practice.

If you tell us where you are and how much time you have, we will tell you which one suits you — including, sometimes, that neither does yet and you should spend a month with the free apps first.

Questions people ask

Is online IELTS coaching effective?

Yes, when the class is small enough that a teacher can read your writing and hear you speak. Format is not what decides effectiveness — attention is. A crowded in-person hall with no marking is worse than a small online class with it.

Is online IELTS coaching cheaper in Bangladesh?

Usually somewhat, because there is no room to rent, and the saving is often passed on. The bigger saving is travel and time: a student who spends two hours a day commuting to class is paying for the course twice.

What if my internet is bad?

This is the real question for online study in Bangladesh, and it is worth answering honestly before you enrol. Ask whether classes are recorded, whether there is a low-data option, and whether the platform works on a phone. If the answer to all three is no, in-person is safer for you.

Can I practise Speaking online?

Yes — Speaking is video, and a video call is closer to the real exam than most people expect, since the examiner is a person looking at you either way. Between classes, BayRen's free Speaking app records you and plays it back, which is the practice most students skip regardless of format.

I live outside Dhaka. What should I do?

Compare online against nothing, not against in-person, because in-person is usually not really available to you. An online course you attend every week beats an in-person course you quit in week three because of the journey.

Where to go next

Both work. One will work for you.

Not Sure Which Format Fits?

Tell us where you are and how much time you have, and we will say honestly which of our formats suits you — including if the answer is neither yet.
