Booking the wrong IELTS is an expensive mistake students make every month. The two versions share a name, a scale and two whole sections — and differ exactly where it hurts. Here is who needs which, what actually changes, and how to make sure the result you pay for is one you can use.

"Almost certainly" is deliberate: the only authority is your university's admission page or the official government page for your visa route. Check it before you book — or send it to us and we will read it with you, free.
What is identical
Listening and Speaking are exactly the same test in both versions, and the 0–9 band scale is the same. Your preparation for those two skills transfers completely. The day looks the same too: Listening is 30 minutes, four parts, 40 questions; Speaking is an 11–14-minute interview in three parts.
What differs
- Reading. Academic gives you three long academic texts. General Training uses everyday materials — notices, workplace documents, one longer article. The GT texts are easier, but the grading compensates: you need more correct answers in GT for the same band.
- Writing Task 1. Academic asks you to describe data — a chart, table, diagram or process. General Training asks for a letter (formal, semi-formal or informal). Different skills, different preparation.
- Writing Task 2 is an essay in both, with Academic topics slightly more abstract.
The scoring gap, in numbers
In Reading the gap is large. About 30 correct out of 40 is band 7.0 in Academic Reading; the same band needs about 34 in General Training Reading. Band 6.0 is about 23 in Academic and about 30 in GT. So "GT is easier" is half true: the texts are easier, the band is not. The Academic table is on the band score calculator. Listening uses the same table in both versions, because it is the same test.
Writing Task 1: the chart versus the letter
This is where the two preparations drift furthest apart. Academic Task 1 is 150 words describing a chart or a process: an overview, comparisons, and the exact language of numbers ("rose sharply", "remained stable", "accounted for a third"). General Training Task 1 is a 150-word letter: to whom, in which register (informal to a friend, semi-formal to a neighbour, formal to a company), and whether all three bullet points in the prompt were covered. Chart language is useless in a letter and a letter's tone is useless on a chart — which is why two months on the wrong version's materials wastes half of your Writing preparation.
Three booking mistakes to avoid
- Preparing with Academic materials and then booking GT (or the reverse) — half your Writing and Reading practice was for the wrong exam.
- Booking standard IELTS when your UK route needs UKVI — the score is fine, the centre is not, and you sit it again.
- Assuming a "migration" route means GT: some professional registration routes inside migration demand Academic. Read your specific route.
And one that happens more than all three: not reading the booking confirmation. The version is printed on it. Look once before the day — a mistake can still be changed then, and cannot after.
How to check in two minutes
- Open your course page and find "English language requirements" or "Entry requirements". It names the version — almost always "IELTS Academic" — and the band.
- Open the visa route's official page (UK Visas and Immigration, IRCC, or the Department of Home Affairs) and find its English rule. If it says UKVI, the centre matters too.
- On the booking site, both versions are listed side by side with the same price and often the same date. Pick the one the pages named, and take a screenshot of the confirmation.
If you have already booked the wrong one, contact the test centre at once. Whether a booking can be changed depends on the centre and on how close the date is; after the transfer deadline the fee is usually lost, which is why the two-minute check above is worth doing before paying.
The two versions cost the same, run at the same centres, and the version is printed on your Test Report Form — the document the university and the visa officer actually read. A result on the wrong version cannot be converted or re-labelled afterwards; it can only be sat again.
One test, two jobs — for those who need both
Many Bangladeshi students have a two-step plan: study first (Academic), then stay (often General Training). Those are two different tests at two different times — and the first result does not serve the second purpose. Put two sittings in the timeline, and remember each result is valid for two years. Questions people ask
Which IELTS do I need for university?
IELTS Academic. Universities in the UK, Canada, Australia and almost everywhere else ask for the Academic version for Bachelor's, Master's and PhD admission, and for most professional registration such as nursing and medicine. Confirm on your course's official page — it will say which.
Which IELTS do I need for Canada PR or a work visa?
Usually IELTS General Training — Express Entry for Canadian permanent residence, for example, accepts General Training and converts it to CLB levels. Some professional registration routes inside a migration application still demand Academic, so read your specific route on the government's site.
Are Listening and Speaking the same in both versions?
Yes, exactly the same test and the same 0–9 scale. Only Reading and Writing differ. Your preparation for Listening and Speaking transfers completely from one version to the other.
Is General Training easier than Academic?
The Reading texts are easier to read, but the band thresholds are stricter to compensate: you need more correct answers out of 40 in General Training for the same band. Writing Task 1 is a letter instead of a chart. Overall, neither version is a shortcut.
What is IELTS for UKVI?
The same test — Academic or General Training — taken at a centre approved by UK Visas and Immigration and booked as a separate product. Some UK visa routes and most pre-sessional English courses require it; many degree courses accept standard IELTS Academic. Check both the university page and the visa route before booking.
Which version does BayRen teach?
