IELTS Academic vs General Training: Which One Do You Need?

Booking the wrong IELTS is an expensive mistake students make every month. The two versions share a name, a scale and two sections — and differ exactly where it hurts.

Who needs which

"Almost certainly" is deliberate: the only authority is your university's admission page or the official government page for your visa route. Check it before you book — or send it to us and we will read it with you, free.

What is identical

Listening and Speaking are exactly the same test in both versions, and the 0–9 band scale is the same. Your preparation for those two skills transfers completely.

What differs

• Reading. Academic gives you three long academic texts. General Training uses everyday materials — notices, workplace documents, one longer article. The GT texts are easier, but the grading compensates: you need more correct answers in GT for the same band.
• Writing Task 1. Academic asks you to describe data — a chart, table, diagram or process. General Training asks for a letter (formal, semi-formal or informal). Different skills, different preparation.
• Writing Task 2 is an essay in both, with Academic topics slightly more abstract.

Three booking mistakes to avoid

• Preparing with Academic materials and then booking GT (or the reverse) — half your Writing and Reading practice was for the wrong exam.
• Booking standard IELTS when your UK route needs UKVI — the score is fine, the centre is not, and you sit it again.
• Assuming a "migration" route means GT: some professional registration routes inside migration demand Academic. Read your specific route.
