Canadian immigration does not think in IELTS bands. It thinks in CLB levels, and your IELTS result is converted into them. Understanding that conversion is what turns “I need a good score” into a specific target worth training for — and it changes which section you should be working on.
First: the right test
For Canadian permanent residence through Express Entry, the accepted IELTS test is General Training — not Academic. Academic is the version universities ask for.
This is worth being blunt about because the mistake is common in Bangladesh and it is expensive. The two tests share Listening and Speaking, but Reading and Writing differ, and a result on the wrong version cannot be used for the wrong purpose. There is no conversion and no appeal — you sit it again and pay again. Check the version on your booking confirmation before the day. Canada does not read bands. It reads CLB.
The Canadian Language Benchmark is the scale Canadian immigration uses for English, and every accepted test is converted into it. Your IELTS bands are an input; the CLB level is what the system actually sees.
Two things follow, and both change how you should prepare.
- The thresholds are not the same across the four sections. Listening needs a higher band than Reading to reach the same CLB level. A student who trains all four equally is training against the wrong target.
- Your CLB is set by your weakest section, not your average. There is no compensating. Three sections at CLB 10 and one at CLB 7 is a CLB 7 profile for the purposes that matter most.
The conversion table
For IELTS General Training, the published conversion is:

Confirm this on IRCC's own website before you rely on it. Immigration rules change, and the only authoritative version of this table is the government's. This page is written by an English school, not an immigration consultancy.
What the table tells you to study
Read the CLB 9 row again: Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Speaking 7.0. Listening is a full band higher than Reading.
That single fact reorganises a study plan. Most Bangladeshi students treat Listening as the easy section and spend their time on Writing, which is reasonable advice for university admission and wrong here. For a CLB 9 target:
- Listening is the section most likely to cap you. 8.0 is roughly 35 or more correct out of 40 — there is very little room for a lapse in concentration in Section 4, or for a spelling mistake in Section 1. Numbers, names and spelling under time pressure are worth drilling specifically — the free Listening app is built for exactly that.
- Reading at 7.0 is more forgiving than it looks — but only if you finish. If your third passage is half empty, the problem is pace, not comprehension, and the fix is a timing rule rather than more reading.
- Writing at 7.0 is where most people actually stop. It is the one skill you cannot correct alone, because you cannot see your own errors. If you could, they would not be there. Our guide to getting past 6.5 is about this specific wall.
- Speaking at 7.0 rewards range, not perfection. Memorised answers are heard and cost marks. The free Speaking app shows band 7 and band 9 answers to the same question, so you can see the difference rather than being told about it.
Why everyone says CLB 9
CLB 9 is not a minimum requirement. It is the level at which language stops being a formality and starts being a genuine advantage in the points system — and it is also where certain additional points become available. That is why it is the number people repeat.
What this page will not do is quote you a points total or a cut-off score. Those change, sometimes several times a year, and a stale number on a coaching centre's blog is worse than no number. Get the current picture from IRCC directly or from a licensed consultant. What we can tell you with confidence is the language half: what the bands mean, and how to reach them.
The mistakes that cost the most
- Booking Academic instead of General Training. Said twice on purpose. It is the single most expensive mistake here.
- Averaging in your head. "I got 7.5, 7.5, 6.5, 7.5, that's basically CLB 9." It is not. The 6.5 sets the level.
- Sitting the exam before a mock. The exam fee is significant, and a first sitting that is also your first full timed test is usually a wasted one. Sit a marked mock first — it costs a fraction of the exam and tells you whether to book.
- Letting the result age. IELTS is valid for two years. If your process takes eighteen months, plan the test date so the result is still valid when it is assessed, not just when you first submit.
- Retaking the whole test for one section. Whether a single-section retake is available and accepted depends on the test centre and on IRCC's current policy. Ask the test centre directly rather than assuming either way.

A sensible order to do this in
- Confirm on IRCC's site which program you are applying under and what it requires.
- Work out the CLB level you need, and write down the four bands from the table above.
- Take the free level test to see roughly where you are, then a full mock to see where you really are.
- Give most of your time to whichever section is furthest below its threshold — not to all four equally. For CLB 9 that is very often Listening or Writing.
- Book the exam when a mock says you are there, not when the calendar says you should be.
