IELTS Band Requirements for UK, Canada and Australia Universities

Before you prepare for IELTS, know the number you are preparing for. Here is what universities in the three most popular destinations typically ask of international students — and what the small print really means.

The short version

These are typical published ranges, not rules. Every university sets its own requirement, course by course, and can change it year to year — the only number that matters is the one on your course page. If you want help reading it, message us and we will check it with you.

The small print that catches students

• "No section below…" Most offers include a per-section minimum, commonly 5.5 or 6.0. An overall 6.5 with a 5.0 in Writing can still be a rejection. Train your weakest skill hardest.
• Competitive courses ask more. Law, medicine, journalism and teaching often want 7.0 overall or higher, with 6.5–7.0 in every section.
• UK routes may require IELTS for UKVI — the same test taken at an approved centre. Pre-sessional English courses usually need it; many degree courses accept standard IELTS Academic. Check both the university page and the visa route.
• Canada: many colleges (as opposed to universities) ask for 6.0 in every single section — a flat profile matters more than one strong skill.
• Scores expire. IELTS is valid for two years. Sit the test so it is still valid on the day your course starts.

What if you are half a band short?

Half a band is usually one skill's problem, not four. A 6.0 student aiming at 6.5 almost always has one section dragging the average — most often Writing. Two to three months of guided work on that one skill is the realistic, proven path: that is exactly how the IELTS Master Course is built, with ten of its thirty classes on Writing and teacher feedback on every task.
